On the 25th of October 2018, to mark Internet Day 2018, the IE Domain Registry launched their ‘Digital Town’ initiative. An initiative designed to highlight the benefits and possibilities of the Internet. They chose Gorey, County Wexford to celebrate their digital achievements and the impact of high speed broadband on society, businesses and local communities. By showcasing the achievements in Gorey, IEDR hope to inspire other Irish towns to emulate this journey to becoming a digital town.
Throughout the month of October, IEDR, Wexford County Council, The Chamber of Commerce and the local innovation incubator centre The Hatch Lab, planned and oversaw a variety of digital engagements. From helping local businesses like The Kitchen to engage with social media, to working with Getting Citizens Online to help ‘non-liners’ improve their digital skills. The digital engagements aimed to showcase the achievements in the town, how they are developing digital skills and know-how.

All this work culminated in the official launch and celebration in the town centre civic square. At the launch as well as a panel discussion about the digital town initiative, there were many groups and organisations on hand throughout the day for demonstrations and advice.
